Q&A with Hamilton Souther, Mystic & Technologist

Jun 08, 2025

At first blush, Hamilton Souther seems like a walking paradox. The same guy who launches web3 and AI projects also happens to have spent years living off the land in the Amazon (the rainforest, not the company). But Hamilton sees no contradiction. To him, ayahuasca and AI are both powerful technologies designed to expand consciousness and solve complex problems.

High on ayahuasca and surrounded by other people’s vomit

Aug 11, 2024

I’m lying on my back on a thin mattress deep in the Amazon jungle. Within arm’s reach is a small torch, a plastic tub, and an ominous roll of loo paper.

I stretch my fingers out to reassure myself it’s all still there, when I hear it: ‘Blergh!’ and a vomit chain reaction hits the room as others begin to follow suit and hurl.

How a Group of Healers in Peru Helped Me Discover a Miracle - Within Myself

Mar 21, 2019

Broccoli. That’s the word that comes to mind as my plane descends into Iquitos, Peru. From my window, the Amazon jungle appears to be made up of countless bunches of flowering broccoli heads. I have never seen anything like it—neither the broccoli trees, nor the snaking tributaries of water that weave between them. Looking back, I think my brain was trying to make sense of the landscape as I landed in a part of the world where I had never been. But I have not come for the scenery. I have come in search of a miracle.

Interview: Master Shaman Hamilton Souther

Apr 15, 2014

Master Shaman Hamilton Souther, founder of the Blue Morpho Ayahausca and Shamanism Center in Peru, has seen countless lives transformed through ayahuasca, the powerful South American hallucinogenic beverage prepared from the bark of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and the leaf of Psychotria viridis (often called charcuna). He says his new cannabis-oriented discipline is “on par with people’s ayahuasca experiences.”

In Peru, a mystery tour of the mind

Aug 20, 2010

IQUITOS, PERU — Kevin Simmons, a 28-year-old Chicago native, said he “was stuck” — depressed, locked away in his home and taking more than a year to even open his e-mail.

The road to recovery, he said, came deep in the Peruvian jungle, in the form of a sludgelike concoction the Indians call “the sacred vine of the soul.”

Down the Amazon in Search of Ayahuasca

Apr 8, 2009

Although his parents urged him to study medicine, Jimmy Weiskopf dropped out of college and in the 1970s moved to Colombia, where he eventually began to focus on a different kind of elixir. The New York City native became an early advocate for the hallucinogenic plant mixture ayahuasca. For centuries, Amazonian Indians have been drinking ayahuasca, also known as yaje — a combination of the ayahuasca vine, tree bark and other plants — to achieve a trancelike state that they believe cleanses body and mind and enables communication with spirits.

Peru: Hell and Back

Mar 1, 2006

I will never forget what it was like. The overwhelming misery. The certainty of never-ending suffering. No one to help you, no way to escape. Everywhere I looked: darkness so thick that the idea of light seemed inconceivable. Suddenly, I found myself swirling down a tunnel of fire, wailing figures calling out to me in agony, begging me to save them. Others tried to terrorize me. “You will never leave here,” they said. “Never. Never.”

The Vision Seekers

Sep 12, 2004

Here’s the truth: I have traveled more than 4,000 miles to the middle of the Peruvian Amazon to be “cured” by shamans. It’s nighttime. The riverboat I’m on plies dark waters, the jungle thick on either side, emitting loud reptilian sounds that drone on like police sirens. I see no lights, no villages anywhere.
